PhD, Mechanical Engineering

Hi, I'm Bryan! I am currently pursuing a PhD in Imperial College London, in the Nuclear Engineering Group within the Department of Mechanical Engineering. My research so far primarily deals with the multi-physics simulation of nuclear reactor cores, modelling both the neutron kinetics and thermal hydraulics of different reactor types, developing a surrogate model for the core, and eventually implementing it within a broader simulation that includes the rest of the system, such as the steam generators. I am also testing out a novel coarse-mesh computational fluid dynamics code developed at the University of Sheffield and the Science and Technology Facilities Council Daresbury Laboratory. All the different physics in the reactor have effects on each other, so it is important to take all of them into account to paint an accurate picture of what is going on within, especially in safety analyses where we need to determine if accident scenarios may occur.

My interest in nuclear engineering began when I borrowed a book from the library to read while on weekend duty during National Service, which was on the history and development of nuclear science, right from the discovery of the atom all the way to its culmination in the Manhattan project. It dawned on me that humans actually discovered a way to split the very building blocks of the world, and the science that went behind that was absolutely fascinating and extremely promising. I soon realised that you could actually study about nuclear power in higher education and pursue it as a career, and after graduating from the Chemical Engineering course in the National University of Singapore I am finally pursuing this dream!

I chose to pursue nuclear energy as a career not just because of interest but also practicality. Both global warming and recent events (notably the Russian invasion of Ukraine) reminded the world of the value of energy security, and I believe that nuclear power is a 'when' and not an 'if' for Singapore. I want to be there to contribute to our efforts when it does eventually take off.

Aside from my studies in London, I am an avid traveller and I love to explore countries, to explore cities and towns that most people have never heard of, primarily in Europe for now where I am based. Having already been doing so back in NUS, I also sing in an a cappella group in Imperial College, where we perform at events, busk in Central London and take part in competitions.
