Thirty years after global fallout, Strontium-90 – a radioactive product of nuclear fission – has reached half of its decay cycle. Traditionally measured by Liquid Scintillation Counting (LSC), Sr-90 will soon require more sensitive detection methods as it decays in the environment. At ANU, I am looking to measure Sr-90 in environmental samples like corals and soil with Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS), offering more precise tracking of its ongoing decay and assess its impact on ecosystems over time.
