Matriculation Year: 2024
University of California, Berkeley
Masters, Nuclear Engineering and Public Policy

Hi all, I'm CJ! In 2024, I received my B.S. in Chemical Engineering, magna cum laude, at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, with minors in Nuclear Engineering and Science & Technology Policy. As an SNRSI Scholar, I am currently pursuing a dual master’s degree in Nuclear Engineering and Public Policy at the University of California, Berkeley.

Growing up in a province in the Philippines where the climate and energy crises became my lived experiences, I became interested in nuclear energy to play a key role in addressing these problems. My research interests primarily lie in the intersection between engineering and policy, especially regarding regulatory and legal frameworks necessary for a country to implement a nuclear energy program as well as challenges related to the nuclear fuel cycle. At present, I am working on research related to radioactive waste disposal methods under Professors Rebecca Abergel and Per Peterson at UC Berkeley.

When I was an undergraduate, I co-wrote a paper on the preparedness of ASEAN countries to adopt nuclear power. I sincerely believe that nuclear energy can benefit not only my country but Southeast Asia as a whole, and I am grateful to SNRSI for giving me the opportunity to contribute to the region in this capacity.

In my spare time, I like to read, travel, swim, and write short stories. And like any Filipino, I naturally enjoy the occasional karaoke session!
